WORKING TOGETHER WITH YAK HERDERS IN REFORESTATION IN LANGTANG 2021-202

As part of the One Day One Tree initiative, The Partners Nepal and Tenjin Eco-Treks collaborated to support yak herders in Langtang, addressing the impact of overgrazing on vegetation, soil, and biodiversity. Livestock grazing had made native plants increasingly scarce, threatening the ecosystem.

To mitigate this, the organizations promoted sustainable grazing practices by educating herders on pasture rotation and using yak dung for reforestation. They also provided essential supplies, including high-quality tarps, torch lights, gumboots, raincoats, and warm jackets, enabling herders to relocate livestock to higher altitudes during the monsoon, ensuring both protection and comfort.

This approach balances livestock needs with ecosystem preservation. In exchange for this support, herders agreed to supply yak dung to the enclosures established in 2022 and 2024. The project avoids chemical fertilizers, relying on natural alternatives like yak dung, with herders committing to deliver dung during their seasonal yak movements. The Partners Nepal is very grateful to our respected donor agencies such as Hauser Exkursionen, Nepal Hilfe-Tirol, Alice C. Tyler, Light Educational Development (LED), and many individuals for the conservation and restoration of forest reforestation in Langtang National Park and Buffer Zone.
