Working together with Yak Herders in Reforestation in Langtang 2025-2026

Serve The Mountain Communities

As part of the One Day One Tree initiative, The Partners Nepal partnered with Tenjin Eco-Treks to support yak herders in the Langtang Valley in addressing the impacts of overgrazing on vegetation, soil health, and biodiversity. With native alpine plants increasingly threatened by intensive grazing, the program promotes sustainable pasture management practices.

Herders received training on pasture rotation and the productive use of yak dung for reforestation. They were also provided with essential gear—tarpaulins, torch lights, gumboots, raincoats, and warm jackets—to ensure safer seasonal movement of livestock to higher elevations during the monsoon. Together, these efforts help balance pastoral livelihoods with ecosystem restoration, strengthening climate resilience while protecting Langtang’s fragile alpine landscapes.

Impact

Through the One Day One Tree initiative, The Partners Nepal and Tenjin Eco-Treks supported yak herders with sustainable grazing training and essential equipment, enabling safer livestock movement while protecting fragile alpine vegetation. Donor support promoted pasture rotation and community-led reforestation, directly enhancing livelihoods, restoring biodiversity, and building climate resilience across Langtang’s high-mountain ecosystems.

“With training and simple support like tarps and boots, we can move our yaks safely and protect the pasture. Now we understand that caring for the land also protects our future.”
