Brief History of Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial Museum and Elderly Care Center

SIR EDMUND HILLARY built the clinic in Bung in 1989, as requested by the local people known as the late Uttar Kubir. The clinic was built in the remote village of Bung to provide health services to needy families with limited health services. Sir Ed’s attachment to this village since he walked through this village after the first ascent of Mount Everest in the 1953 British Everest Expedition. Consequently, Sir Edmund Hillary and the members of Himalayan Trust Nepal built the Bung Clinic in 1989.

Our Initiative

The Bung is one of the remote regions of Solukhumbu located at the southeast of Solukhumbu at an altitude ranging from 1200-2400 m. is located in Mahakulung Rural Municipality-1, Bung, Solukhumbu district in the Sagarmatha Zone of northeastern Nepal. The population of Bung is widely scattered, with approximately 4500 people living in 900 households spread in 1-9 wards.

The Partners Nepal, with initial funding support, came from Sir Edmund Hillary Stiftung Deutschland, Germany. NepalHilfe-Tirol (Austria) established the Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial Museum and Elderly Care Home in Bung village. This project aimed to restore the clinic built in 1989 by Sir Edmund Hillary to provide health services to Bung, Gudel, Cheskam, Pawai, and Sotang villages. Later, this building collapsed due to the 2015 earthquake that destroyed the original building built by Sir Edmund Hillary. To manage and sustain this project, the Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial Museum and Elderly Care Center Management Committee were established in 2017.

Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial Museum and Elderly Care Center were jointly inaugurated by Prof. Wolfgang Nairz, the chairman of NepalHilfe-Tirol, and Mr. Sagar Kirant, the mayor of Mahakulung Rural Municipality-1, Bung of Solukhumbu, on 16 October 2017. This project is now managed by the Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial Museum and the Elderly Care Center Management Committee, with funding support from The Partners Nepal.

With requests made by local people, i.e., the late Uttar Kubir of Bung, SIR EDMUND HILLARY built the clinic in Bung in 1989 to provide health services to needy families; the health service was limited then. According to local people, it was Sir Ed’s attachment to this village. However, he had not walked through this village after the first ascent of Mount Everest in the 1953 British Everest Expedition.

With initial support from Sir Edmund Hillary Stiftung Deutschland Germany, NepalHilfe-Tirol, Austria, and The Partners Nepal with implementation partner by Hill Development Conservation Group (HDCG) were able to complete the physical infrastructures, and the local people proposed to establish Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial Museum and Elder Care Center in Bung.

In Bung, the Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial Museum and Elder Care Center is to preserve and revitalize the original clinic built back in 1989 by the late Sir Edmund Hillary. This clinic provided numerous services to the people of Bung, Cheskam, Gudel, Sotang, and Pawai Rural Municipality of lower Solukhumbu, where there was no support from the government at the time of building this clinic.
